Culture in Plovdiv
Рубрика: Tourism Източник: Besides its musical attractions, Plovdiv is not short of other delights for tourists. The city has an archaeological, an ethnographic and a history museum. The Old Town is a cultural site on its own, with most of the houses fully restored from the times when they were build in the mid-19th century.Just 10 minutes from Plovdiv is another “ancient” town, Assenovgrad. Built in the reaches of the magnificent Rhodope Mountains, the town is a cool place to be in the summer heat. The city has two trademarks: the ancient Assenova Krepost (Assen’s Fortress) named after Tsar Ivan Assen II (1218-1241) and the Bachkovo monastery founded in 1083. Some call Assenovgrad “Little Jerusalem” because of the numerous monasteries, churches and chapels in the surroundings of the town. There are more than 40 chapels, eight churches and four monasteries.
Another reason to visit Assenovgrad is its delightful Mavrud wine. The name comes from the Geek “mavros” meaning black.
